Secondary Water Damage

Following a plumbing failure in a home, primary damage is not the only thing that a homeowner needs to address. Secondary damage can occur from a number of things when experiencing an unintended water event. Even just a few inches of standing water in your bathroom can put into motion a cascade effect of damage if not dealt with properly. Here are some of the most common forms of secondary water damage.

The Dangers of Mold

Anywhere that there's enough moisture present, mold can grow. Mold only needs a small amount of time in order to develop. It only requires 24 – 48 hours of moisture to grow.

Health Risks: Exposure to damp and moldy environments may cause a variety of health effects, or none at all. Some people are sensitive to molds. For these people, molds can cause nasal stuffiness, throat irritation, coughing or wheezing, eye irritation, or, in some cases, skin irritation.
If there are children in the home or elderly residents, mold will have a harsher affect on their bodies creating severe health issues.

Mold Prevention Tips

  • Keep humidity levels as low as you can—no higher than 50%–all day long. An air conditioner or dehumidifier will help you keep humidity levels low. Humidity levels can change over the course of a day with changes in the moisture in the air and temperature, so you should check humidity levels more than once a day.

  • Be sure your home has enough ventilation. Use exhaust fans which vent outside your home in the kitchen and bathroom. Make sure your clothes dryer vents outside your home.

  • Fix any leaks in your home’s roof, walls, or plumbing so mold does not have moisture to grow.

  • Clean up and dry out your home quickly and thoroughly, 24-48hrs after flooding.

  • Add mold inhibitors to paints before painting.

  • Clean bathrooms with mold-killing products.

  • Remove or replace carpets and upholstery that have been soaked and cannot be dried promptly. Consider not using carpet in rooms or areas like bathrooms or basements that may have a lot of moisture.

Examples of Mold

Mold can grow in walls, floors, carpet and furniture. Most frequent type of mold is black. If you are curious if it is mold or growth, if you apply pressure it will smear like mascara. If there is any doubt, have Quick Dry come out to do a free inspection.
